How To Create Success
-ramosa-
You can create success. It is indicated by the actions you take on a daily basis. If you take the right actions and do them consistently then there is no reason why you shouldn’t be successful. “But what actions are appropriate to ensure that success is inevitable?” A very small portion of success is hindered by the difficulty of the task you want to accomplish. The majority is determined by a set of actions you can take to replicate success with any goal. Here is a list of actions that you can take to create predictable success with any goal.

Write Down Your Goals

Simply writing down a goal increases the odds of it happening by 15 to 30 percent. In many mentoring sessions the first thing I discuss with my mentee is their list of goals. Not surprisingly, 90 percent of them do not have a single goal written down. Most don’t even have a schedule or a to-do list for the week. This is where we will begin. You must write down your goals. Writing down a goal is not enough. Your goal must be crystal clear in defining what you want to accomplish. It’s not enough to say you want to get a job after graduating college. You should articulate what type of work you want, who you want to work for (or work for yourself), where you want to work, how much you want to make, how many hours you want to work, etc. Your goals should cover the Five W’s (who, what, when, where, why).

Put A Number On It

Next you need to attach a number to your goal. Success is much more likely when it can be quantified. This goes along with writing detailed goals that we just talked about. When you attach a number to something you make it much more real. For example your goal should not to “give back to the community.” Your goal should be to give 100 hours of your time to mentoring troubled youth in your community. With a vague goal of “giving back.” You have not identified what success looks like. By giving 100 hours of your time you can track your progress towards your goal in number of hours volunteered. It is much easier to stay motivated if you have a goal with a number attached to it. You can actually see progress being made towards that goal and how much longer it will take to succeed. Always, always, always attach a number to your goal. Without a number, it is almost impossible to determine how you will succeed or when you have succeeded.

Schedule Time

Most people waste nearly four hours per day getting motivated to do a task. (First is the coffee stop, then chatting, and then checking the net, then checking social media…). The main reason people fail to accomplish their goals is because they don’t schedule time for them. Goals get lost in the noise of daily life. To correct this all you have to do is get comfortable using a calendar or task list. Scheduling time is different for everyone and some people need multiple reminders while some only need one. Find a scheduling system that works for you and set aside time to accomplish your goals. The only way to predict success is to treat goal time as untouchable. Nothing (except a tragic emergency) should interfere with this time no matter what.

Create Accountability

Even with written goals and scheduled time, many times we fall short of success. The reason is that if we fail on our personal goals, often no one knows about it. Most of us can live with laziness or quitting if no one knows we gave up. To ensure success you need to create a system of accountability. The best system of accountability is some form of progress reporting to someone. Remember grade school when you were getting ready to get your report card? I’ll bet that you were more worried about what your parents would say if you got a bad grade then you were about getting a bad grade. Progress reporting is the same in real life. Most of us hate to be seen as quitters or failures. To ensure success, find a person to hold you accountable for achieving your goals and create a progress reporting system with them.

Study Successful People

Why waste hours of your life trying to reinvent the wheel. Chances are people have already accomplished what you are trying to accomplish in some capacity. The unfortunate fact is most people are too proud or too afraid to ask for help. As a result, they suffer, struggle and are likely to fail. If you want to create predictable success you need to study successful people. Put your pride and fear away and start learning. You can learn from others by reading about their success, mimicking their actions, and following them. But if you want to get to the next level faster you need to reach out to them and establish a mentoring relationship. Don’t be afraid of successful people. They are just people. They were like you once just starting out and learning. My experience has been that successful people are ready and willing to help you succeed. All it takes is a personalized phone call or email geared towards offering how you can be of service to them. Establish a relationship and they will be in your corner all the way to the finish.

Create a System

Once you have set your goals, established a schedule, have someone to report to and have a mentor…you are ready to create a system. Success is determined by your ability to create a system of activities that you can do on a daily basis that will lead you to your goal. This is where you will spend the majority of your time with research, trial and error. Remember that you can fail multiple times in your pursuit of success. The only time you are a “failure” is when you quit. Creating a system of actions will be based on what kind of goal you want to achieve. If this is something you need help with, reach out to me and we can chat more about what your goal is and what kind of system would be best to help you reach that goal. Once you have a system in place…work it relentlessly!

Inject Inspiration Daily

On the road to success, people often get burnt out two or three steps away from the finish line. Inspiration is recommended daily. I believe the only reason I have achieved my goals is because I get myself inspired on a daily basis. Find out what inspires you. It could be reading this blog, reading personal development books or watching inspirational videos on YouTube. Success is a series of peaks and valleys. You will have highs and lows. Reaching the summit is an uphill climb that requires extreme motivation.

Succeed

This is the finish. If you have taken care of everything I have mentioned in this article you should have no reason why you haven’t succeed. What matters most is to keep hustling and never quit. You will get there! Thanks for reading! -Aaron Madonna

Inspiring Poem – Don’t Quit
Screen Shot 2011-09-15 at 4.42.45 PM

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong as they sometimes will.

When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill.

When funds are low and the debts are high.

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh.

When care is pressing you down a bit.

Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns.

As everyone of us sometimes learns.

And many a failure turns about

When he might have won had he stuck it out:

Don’t give up though the pace seems slow –

You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out –

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.

And you never can tell how close you are.

It may be near when it seems so far:

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –

It’s when things seem worst that you must not QUIT.

The World’s Greatest Lie
"What's the world's greatest lie?" the boy asked, completely surprised. "It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lost control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. That's the world's greatest lie." -Excerpt from The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

How To Spot Fake Friends
3306616582_b92834879e
You really don’t need binoculars to see these people. I want to use today’s article to talk about fake friends. On the road to your dreams, it’s critical that you keep great people in your life and remove people who suck. This is simple math. Add and Subtract. You will reach your dream life if you have the right people to travel there with. “Real friends.” You will not reach your dream life if you have the wrong people sabotaging your journey. “Fake friends.”

Here are a few ways to spot the wrong people - “the fake friends:”

If they let you constantly do dumb sh*t

Fake friends love to see you “dance” for their entertainment. They will encourage you to act like a douche. They will let you make a fool of yourself and put it on YouTube. Since their lives are so miserable, they need to ruin other people’s lives to keep theirs interesting.

If they don’t share their dreams with you

Fake friends are not concerned with bettering their lives. When the topic comes up about what they want to do with their lives they avoid it. They will call you corny for talking about it, or avoid the situation entirely by changing topics or saying “I don’t know” and acting frustrated. The truth is they probably do know but don’t believe in themselves enough to make it happen. To counter this sad reality, they leech onto you to suck the life out of you.

If they don’t call you out when you mess up

Fake friends love to see you go down, because it brings you to their level. Nobody is perfect. Real friends will be there to say “look you are messing up right now in ______ area of your life.” Real friends want you to prosper. Fake friends want you to perish. You need real friends who will keep you on track to reaching your dreams and make you a better person.

If they don’t care about your opinion

Fake friends don’t care what you think. Period. They are only there to project their negative energy onto you and feed off of your energy. They are selfish and so when you tell them things, they pretend to listen but can never remember what it was you tried to teach them.

If they only seem to be around when they want something

As I mentioned, they are selfish. You can easily spot a fake friend by looking for when they like to come around. Do they only call you to go drinking because they know you will buy drinks for them? Do they only call you when they are in trouble? Do they only call you when they need you to pick them up? Do they only call you when they are short on money? Do they only call you to complain?

If they always complain about everything

That last question brings me to this point. Fake friends love to complain because they have nothing else going for them. They whine about every stupid little thing. Why would you want to waste your life listening to that?

If they aren’t looking out for your health

Lastly, fake friends don’t care if you die. Sorry to sound so harsh but it’s true. Fake friends will let you drink, smoke, chew, party, eat, and drug yourself to death. A fake friend does not care what you do to yourself as long as it entertains them. If you try to better yourself, they try to derail you. Because if you get better you will leave them. They aren’t worried about you; they are worried about being abandoned. Fake friends are still people and people need to be social. If you leave, it means they have to find someone else to feed off of. This means they have to pretend to listen and care about someone long enough to leech onto them and that is more work. I hope this article was a wake up call for you. I hope you are surrounding yourself only with the best people. You need great people in your life! I once had a slew of fake friends… They don’t exist to me any more. They have been subtracted from my life. And you know what… I don’t miss them at all. My life is infinitely better and the people I invest my time in now are the ones who make me a better person. I am blessed to have such great friends and I will make sure to keep them in my life. Thanks for reading and please share! Your real friend, Aaron

10 Ways to Determine if You Are a Member of the Working Dead
Becoming a member of the working dead is not difficult. I define the working dead as a person who has let work take over their life and complaining about it has become more natural than breathing.

Here are ten ways to determine if you are a member of the working dead and ten remedies to take back your life.

1. If you find random reasons to hate your boss that have nothing to do with her/his work performance. (“Oooo I don’t like those socks he’s wearing! “)

Remedy: Stop talking with bitter co-workers about the boss. They suck you into their hatred. If the boss is really a jerk, have a real deal conversation with them about it. Stop complaining without action.

2. If you check the clock more than 5 times per minute and get frustrated at “the day” for not moving faster. Silly rabbit :)

Remedy: Create a side hustle or business that you can work on after completing your core responsibilities.

3. If you have a strong desire to vomit every time you walk into the office.

Remedy: Get a vomit bag because this feeling is going nowhere. This is the best sign that you need to leave ASAP. Stack up savings for a month of non-working/job searching and turn in your resignation.

4. When you fantasize constantly about a natural disaster destroying your office…and select people in it.

Remedy: Get professional help today. These are really dark thoughts and I’m worried for you. Don’t be a “Milton .”

5. If you do the minimum requirements for your job description and spend the rest of the week watching idiots on YouTube… http://youtu.be/cIwTYL1fwJk. This will not improve your life

Remedy: Watch entertaining personal development/inspirational/life enhancing videos on YouTube and then put those lessons to work… http://youtu.be/EhqZ0RU95d4 you will find ways to improve your life doing this.

6. If you need coffee just to get through the first hour of the day…everyday...

Remedy: Find more interesting/risky/rewarding responsibilities at work. Create them if you can’t find them.

7. When you’ve had promiscuous encounters with more than one co-worker to make the workplace more exciting. (Fool me once…)

Remedy: Everybody slips up sometimes, but don’t become that guy/girl who is the creeper who hits on everybody and gets you to drink too much at the corporate party. You can find romance anywhere else. Stay away from the co-workers

8. If your internet freedom gets restricted due to getting too much spyware from surfing “questionable” websites deemed NSFW (not safe for the workplace).

Remedy: Negotiate a remote working environment where you can take care of your core responsibilities and spend the rest of your time doing your own thing. You probably aren’t the type of person who enjoys existing 40-hours per week in a gray box typing on an old ass PC.

9. When you find yourself in a complain-fest with co-workers more than once per week.

Remedy: Whenever you see the complain-fest pre-game warm up happening... it’s time to kindly remove yourself from the conversation.

10. If you’re afraid to quit your job because you secretly like being miserable as an excuse to not be interesting.

Remedy: There will never be a perfect time to quit and start a new life. I recommend saving what you can to take care of the essentials for you and your family for a month or two and leave. If needed sell some of the crap you bought because you don’t need that either. I hope that these 10 signs have opened your eyes to what the working dead looks like. If you find yourself in two or more categories, it’s time to start looking for a way out. Nobody should ever force themselves into misery for money. There are so many ways to get paid and the economy should not be an excuse. People were blaming the economy for inaction during boom times. You alone cannot control the economy, but you can control your future. Make the right choice and escape the working dead. You owe it to your friends, family and most importantly…yourself. -Aaron
